Dream Machines (2014 - 2015)
How do you articulate the space between waking and sleeping, and how does the subconscious evolve during and after migration, disruption, or dislocation? Through video, drawing, and projection, this piece addresses how dreams communicate a more immediate - if less rational - understanding of a specific change of place, and what the psychology of a dream tells us about cultural past, present and future. Media (in this case, video) is, by definition, that which is in between: an abstract lens that depicts dreams that is also in between two states of mind. How does media tell us about our dreams, and how does video mirror the structure of the subconscious, the brain? The sound recordings and documentary footage in dream machines catalog reflections of the subconscious from a group of traveling dreamers (July 2014 - March 2015), along with Naguib Mahfouz, William Allen and Walter Benjamin dreams in Arabic, English and German. Shot on a Canon 70D and Digital Harinezumi; audio recorded on Zoom H4N Recorder.
